It is important to identify competence gaps and competencies. You should also consider the behavior of the job market and be good enough to break the barrier that blocks you upon getting into the level of a good competition. Be clear with your goals and objectives. Aside from that, you should also examine your weaknesses so that you could do something as to repair it and be able to drive yourself for a tough competition.
